About Wardrobe at
The Cross

Wardrobe at The Cross was an idea born out of a desire to provide the kind of shop that we, Hil & Sue, had always wanted to enter. The kind of place that feels warm, feminine and confident, offering the kinds of brands we love to browse. Brands that you can’t find ‘just anywhere’ and that have integrity and love built into their very credentials.

Hil & Sue also wanted this to be a place where advice and knowledge could be shared in the form of bespoke styling and colour services offered by a highly experienced team i.e. Hil & Sue. Welcome to our world.

Proud to be a Neston Independent

Neston is a very important place to Hil & Sue. Hil lived in Little Neston for many years – West Vale to be precise – and Sue lives very nearby in Willaston. They decided to create Wardrobe at The Cross in the heart of Neston – as close to the much-famed cross as possible – because the town holds such a special place on their hearts.

Many evenings have been spent having catch-ups in The Harp, or the Elephant Bank and mant days have been spent with their children wandering along Parkgate front with dripping ice creams and scooters. Neston is a town that deserves the very best and it’s starting to return – a slew of new independents take pride of place on the high street, jostling for space amongst some of the larger chains, and that’s good. For now.

Hil & Sue want to support the revival of Independent retail that is happening countrywide and in Neston itself. It is so very critical to the way we live our lives. We are, after all, a nation of shopkeepers.

Fans of Ethical Fashion Brands

Hil and Sue are both vehemently opposed to ‘catwalk’ fashion and all of the nonsense about having the ‘latest thing’. They’re firmly of the opinion that you should wear something amazing, in a colour that suits you and a shape that gives you joy.

Indeed, both are trained personal stylists and Sue will be offering a full suite of styling options from the Wardrobe at The Cross premises.

About Hil

Hil loves fashion. It’s that simple. She also attended Leeds University but insists that you know that she attended this institution in the nineties NOT the eighties – she was a child of the rave generation so please note that the word ‘attended’ is used here in its loosest sense. Hil’s career has mostly been in fashion and digital marketing so that is why you see much more of her in social media – she doesn’t mind making a total wally of herself if it helps people to see how things might be worn and how to style-up major outfit moments. Hil also likes to tell you a lot about her day, its hard to shut her up (just turn off notifications, Sue does!) and she will bore you senseless about different brands, sustainability in fashion, buying locally and CHEESE. She has two girls, two cats and one amazing husband, Graham.

About Sue

Sue’s career started in the Food industry, indeed she first met Hil’s husband Graham at Leeds University in the eighties. That is how Sue came to meet Hil – Graham needed official sign-off from his best mate (Sue) to say that Hil could be an ‘approved’ new girlfriend back in 2002. Thanks to her degree in Food Science Sue speaks with huge authority on all aspects of nutrition and can hence advice on matters relating to diet, hormones, peri-menopause etc. She is also a fully trained stylist with a top qualification from the London College of Fashion – her advice about what best suits individual body shapes, style personalities and capsule wardrobe dressing is invaluable.. Sue also LOVES her hounds Buster & Hoppy and can often be found marching briskly along the Wirral Way with a canine tethered to each arm. A yoga and pilates devotee, Sue is passionate about wellbeing and tsks regularly about how much Diet Coke Hil puts away. They bicker A LOT, but Hil & Sue are the best of friends because they know that the support they have for each other comes first and foremost.

Becs Rivett

“The best jumper!!! I have been living on The Wirral for a couple of years now and have wanted to find a little store that was on my doorstep where I could buy clothes and gifts. Sue recommended that I try one of the asymmetric knits in a blue colour and I have not taken it off!”

Helen Prince

“Thank you for my gorgeous cardigan! Love it, love all the detail. Had lots of lovely compliments today in Waitrose!”

Gaynor Parry

“Just want to say a big thank you to Hil and Sue for such a very warm welcome to me and my sister on our first visit to WATC. Beautiful store in the heart of Neston with beautiful sustainable brands we can’t find anywhere else in the North West or Wales…”

Dawn & Vicki

“We tried on lots of pieces, nothing was too much trouble for the owners, ensuring pieces were freshly steamed and offering an honest evaluation and suggestion of alternatives when appropriate. We both left happy with a couple of wardrobe essentials and statement pieces. We’ll be back, often!”

Dawn & Vicki

“Couldn’t be more thrilled with my Gem Lettuce ring. It’s my new go-to staple for every outfit. The fabulous neon pink and gold, perhaps counter-intuitively, goes with absolutely everything, and it’s incredibly comfortable to wear. I’ve had so many compliments, which is always a win. Highly recommended!”
